The Government We Deserve

As the media ignores the delays and waivers President Obama and his magic pen have imposed upon the country for this settled law called Obamacare, there are more troubles brewing in the fight to restore liberty.

David Freedlander,  The Daily Beast

Soon Rupert Murdoch’s behemoth won’t be the only conservative cable news station around, the founder of One America News Network, set to be unveiled at CPAC today, tells David Freedlander.

A new right-wing news and talk station is coming to cable boxes later this year, The Daily Beast has learned.

The station, called One America News Network, is slated to announce its launch formally at the Conservative Political Action Conference, the annual gathering of conservatives, in Washington on Thursday.

The new network is a production of Herring Broadcasting, the San Diego-based company behind Wealth TV, a channel dedicated to appealing to and documenting the lifestyles of the rich and famous.

Senators spar over definition of ‘journalist’ in seeking to protect them

The Senate Judiciary Committee, looking to provide protections for journalists and their sources, ran into a roadblock Thursday when lawmakers couldn’t agree on the definition of “journalist.” Under the legislation, journalists wouldn’t have to comply with subpoenas or court orders forcing them to reveal sources or confidential information unless a judge first determines there’s reason to think that a crime has occurred and government officials have exhausted all other alternatives. It’s the third time Congress has considered a “shield law” for journalists. Similar bills have failed despite bipartisan support.

“I’m hoping the third time’s a charm,” said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., the committee’s chairman. The bill defines a journalist as a person who has a “primary intent to investigate events and procure material” in order to inform the public by regularly gathering information through interviews and observations. The person also must intend to report on the news at the start of obtaining any protected information and must plan to publish that news. But senators disagreed on how to define journalists, since some thought the bill’s definition wasn’t specific enough.

CNN Drops Its Own Scoop on Benghazi; Networks Fail to Even Pick It Up

CNN’s Arwa Damon scored an exclusive interview with a suspect in the Benghazi attacks, yet CNN chose to air it only once. Aside from a brief mention of it on Thursday morning, the network dropped its own scoop for almost 24 hours after breaking it at 5 p.m. Wednesday on The Situation Room. None of the three broadcast networks mentioned the story on their Wednesday evening newscasts, and only CBS talked about Benghazi on Thursday, though they didn’t mention Arwa Damon’s report.

CNN host Wolf Blitzer hyped the CNN exclusive that’s “already making huge waves here in Washington.” Yet after covering it for the first 15 minutes of his show, Blitzer made no mention of it again. CNN dropped the story for the rest of the evening, reminding viewers of the reluctance of CNN hosts not named Wolf Blitzer to cover Benghazi. Aside from a brief mention on Thursday morning’s Early Start, Damon’s exclusive interivew didn’t get another plug by CNN until 4:45 p.m. by The Lead host Jake Tapper, just about 24 hours after Blitzer broke the story. In that time period, Fox News mentioned the story twice. Wednesday’s 6 p.m. ET Special Report cited it and host Brett Baier mentioned it the next morning on America’s Newsroom.

Nets Minimize Filner Scandal Coverage, Won't ID Him As A Democrat

ABC and CBS both failed to point out San Diego Mayor Bob Filner’s Democratic party affiliation on their Wednesday morning newscasts. Good Morning America devoted just one 17-second news brief to the ongoing Filner scandal. CBS This Morning didn’t do much better, with two news briefs on the former congressman. NBC’s Today didn’t set aside any air time to the controversy.

The NBC morning show did one-up its Big Three competitors in identifying Anthony Weiner as a Democrat. Stephanie Gosk underlined the “Democratic drums are beating loudly for Anthony Weiner to step out of race for New York mayor“, and noted the scandal-plagued politician’s fourth-place standing among “likely Democratic primary voters”. CBS This Morning and GMAmerely labeled Weiner a “former congressman”.

Rolling Stoned: From Che Guevara to Dzojar Tsarnayev

The Rolling Stone’s cover glamorizing Dzojar Tsarnayev should not have surprised: the cultural left was born hating American power and blaming it for the poverty and oppression of indigenous, darker skinned, Third Worlders  who naturally and justifiably hate us. Expressing admiration for violent anti-Americans has for a long time been a way for the disaffected to exclaim how much they are not like the white imperialists they live among, how – unlike us, they are noble souls, standing with the righteous and the oppressed.

In his masterful book, “Bobos in Paradise,” New York Times columnist and author, David Brooks, explained — better than anyone before him — how therapeutic this sort of thing can be for middle class youth who find themselves living off the wealth of their parents — and Western capitalism in general — a wealth they sense is undeserved, a wealth they feel traps them in an immorally privileged corner.

But Journolist Was Okay, Right?

When Journolist, the liberal group of journalists and wonks, was discovered, David Corn was down right dismissive. Mother Jones‘s D.C. Bureau Chief and Politics Daily columnist David Corn isn’t buying the whole liberal journalism conspiracy theory about Journolist as portrayed in a series of stories in The Daily Caller this week. In his view, Journolist was a progressive place for a group of “progressive journalists” who have “progressive ideas they shared with other “progressive journalists.”

David Corn was a member of Journolist. Fast forward to now and David Corn thinks Groundswell is a big deal. Groundswell is a conservative group that meets in person and has an email list serve. It includes journalists, politicians, and a couple of RedStaters. I’m not on it and do not participate because I don’t trust a few of the GOP whores who routinely get invited to these lists and leak it all when it suits their purposes. See e.g. the Repeal Coalition list. Likewise I find most of these groups to be unproductive time sucks.

Helen Thomas: 'There's No Such Thing Anymore as the Liberal Press'

Years-old comments from recently deceased, legendary White House reporter Helen Thomas are just now coming to light, reports The Washington Examiner, and they’re a bitter pill for both liberals and their detractors. “There is no such thing anymore as the liberal press,” Thomas told a researcher for scholar Stephen Hess, who’s amassing a wealth of data on the careers and viewpoints of hundreds of career journalists who’ve covered DC.

“Look at the newspapers, look at the columnists; most of them are very conservative, predominantly so.” She defines a liberal somewhat broadly as someone who “cares for the poor, the sick, the hungry,” and who “seeks the truth.” The interview with Thomas, which took place in 2005, sees Thomas blaming reporters themselves for their lack of spine:

Hamas mourns death of antisemitic "journalist" Helen Thomas

Many Islamic supremacists in the U.S. are doing so as well. They recognize what a service she performed in giving legitimacy to “Palestinian” jihad propaganda and the bloody jihad against Israel. “Hamas Mourns Helen Thomas,” by Ari Soffer for Israel National News, July 21 (thanks to Ken Zevo):

It might not be the way most high-profile journalists would like to be remembered. Not long after the passing of veteran American journalist Helen Thomas yesterday, aged 92, Hamas’ very own “military wing”, the Izzedeene al-Qassam Brigades, posted on its website a heartfelt eulogy. The post – highlighted by the Elder of Zion blog – was entitled: “Rest in Peace Helen Thomas. We respect you for taking a stand.”

Boston Cop Releases Never-Before-Seen Dzhokhar Photos, Is Promptly Relieved of Duty

Josh Voorhees,  Slate

On Thursday, Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Sean Murphy gave Boston magazine hundreds of photographs that he took during the high-stakes manhunt that ultimately ended in the capture of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. The most powerful pic in the bunch is the one you see above, a snapshot of the alleged Boston bomber emerging from the backyard boat that he had been hiding in with the red dot of a sniper’s sight centered on his forehead.

Murphy, a tactical photographer with the police department, says he went public with his never-before-seen photos in an effort to counter the message he believed was conveyed by Rolling Stone‘s new August cover that has been widely criticized for glamorizing the alleged Boston bombing suspect. “What Rolling Stone did was wrong,” Murphy told Boston. “This guy is evil. This is the real Boston bomber. Not someone fluffed and buffed for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.”Murphy made it clear that he was speaking only for himself, and not for his department. But it turns out that wasn’t enough to keep him out of trouble. Boston magazine reports that within hours of the photos being published Murphy was informed that he had been relieved of duty:
