CNN Drops Its Own Scoop on Benghazi; Networks Fail to Even Pick It Up

CNN’s Arwa Damon scored an exclusive interview with a suspect in the Benghazi attacks, yet CNN chose to air it only once. Aside from a brief mention of it on Thursday morning, the network dropped its own scoop for almost 24 hours after breaking it at 5 p.m. Wednesday on The Situation Room. None of the three broadcast networks mentioned the story on their Wednesday evening newscasts, and only CBS talked about Benghazi on Thursday, though they didn’t mention Arwa Damon’s report.

CNN host Wolf Blitzer hyped the CNN exclusive that’s “already making huge waves here in Washington.” Yet after covering it for the first 15 minutes of his show, Blitzer made no mention of it again. CNN dropped the story for the rest of the evening, reminding viewers of the reluctance of CNN hosts not named Wolf Blitzer to cover Benghazi. Aside from a brief mention on Thursday morning’s Early Start, Damon’s exclusive interivew didn’t get another plug by CNN until 4:45 p.m. by The Lead host Jake Tapper, just about 24 hours after Blitzer broke the story. In that time period, Fox News mentioned the story twice. Wednesday’s 6 p.m. ET Special Report cited it and host Brett Baier mentioned it the next morning on America’s Newsroom.

CNN's Gun Control Ideas: Handgun Ban, $5,000 Ammo

CNN’s Piers Morgan plugged Great Britain’s handgun ban on Tuesday as he and attorney Star Jones wondered how to take more guns off the streets in the U.S.  “Well, in Britain, we had a sort of dramatic reduction in all fire offenses when we made it a mandatory five-year jail sentence if you were caught with a handgun. It works,” Morgan insisted. Jones suggested hiking the cost of ammunition.

“And if you’re not going to reduce the volume of guns, make the ammunition expensive so that every time you point a gun at somebody and you’re going to pull the trigger, think, is that life worth $5,000 for a bullet?” Jones said. “Make the ammunition more expensive. I don’t think that’s in the Constitution,” she added. After ripping an Arkansas school where teachers and administrators will conceal carry, Jones fretted, “I support the Second Amendment of the United States Constitution. But I’m telling you, the guns, we need to get them out.”

Interfaith outreach in Nigeria: Muslims bomb churches, murdering at least 45 people

MIT’s Report Says MIT Did Nothing Wrong In Aaron Swartz Case

In what was described as a “whitewash” by Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman, MIT issued a report that absolved MIT of wrongdoing in the Aaron Swartz case. The “independent” review panel made up of MIT employees concluded that MIT did not target Aaron Swartz. Which is not true at all, MIT did target Swartz and set him up in order to provide evidence to promote a prosecution.

A long-awaited independent report on MIT’s role in the federal prosecution of Aaron Swartz concludes that the institution behaved neutrally throughout the affair, but “did not duly take into account the wider background of information policy against which the prosecution played out and in which MIT people have traditionally been passionate leaders.” Reif, in an open letter today, said MIT was vindicated by the report. “The report also sets the record straight by dispelling widely circulated myths,” wrote Reif. “For example, it makes clear that MIT did not ‘target’ Aaron Swartz, we did not seek federal prosecution, punishment or jail time, and we did not oppose a plea bargain.”

The College Degree Scam

For years we’ve heard the propaganda line that everyone needs to go to college — that a degree will improve your status and standard of living. It has become politically incorrect to even suggest that a higher education degree might not be right for every young American. So it’s not surprising that those without a college degree often feel inferior and marginalized.

Has a college degree become the litmus test for whether a person is well educated and successful? These highly successfully individuals would likely disagree with that premise. Michael Dell, Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Larry Ellison, Steve Jobs, Richard Branson, Simon Cowell, Barry Diller, Ted Turner, Ralph Lauren, Governor Jan Brewer, Governor Scott Walker, Governor Gary Herbert, Peter Jennings, Walter Cronkite, John Chancellor, William Safire, Larry King, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Woody Allen, Karl Rove, and 33 members of the U.S. House of Representatives. What do they all have in common? Not one received a college degree!

Poster Girl

It appears the vandal defacing public buildings and monuments in Washington DC is a 58 year old illegal immigrant. The woman, who has a Chinese passport, arrived in Washington a few days ago and was traveling on an expired visa, prosecutors said. Police said she had no fixed address but that she told officers she lived in Los Angeles. She was caught when she was observed at the National Cathedral.

When a police officer approached her, she walked away and placed the can with green paint inside one of three bags that were sitting on chairs in the chapel, documents show. She also had green paint on her clothing, shoes and body, according to the documents. She was wearing a multicolored sock on her right arm, and a similar sock was found in a trash can in a bathroom at the cathedral on top of a can of green paint, according to the documents. The bags placed in the chapel also had paint cans in them, the documents show.

The Business of Mass Incarceration

Debbie Bourne, 45, was at her apartment in the Liberty Village housing projects in Plainfield, N.J., on the afternoon of April 30 when police banged on the door and pushed their way inside. The officers ordered her, her daughter, 14, and her son, 22, who suffers from autism, to sit down and not move and then began ransacking the home. Bourne’s husband, from whom she was estranged and who was in the process of moving out, was the target of the police, who suspected him of dealing cocaine. As it turned out, the raid would cast a deep shadow over the lives of three innocents—Bourne and her children.

The murder of a teenage boy by an armed vigilante, George Zimmerman, is only one crime set within a legal and penal system that has criminalized poverty. Poor people, especially those of color, are worth nothing to corporations and private contractors if they are on the street. In jails and prisons, however, they each can generate corporate revenues of $30,000 to $40,000 a year. This use of the bodies of the poor to make money for corporations fuels the system of neoslavery that defines our prison system.

NC Muslims hope Gov. Pat McCrory vetoes anti-Shariah bill

North Carolina Muslims hope they can persuade Gov. Pat McCrory, a Republican, to veto a bill that prohibits state judges from considering “foreign law.” “It’s going to be tough,” said Rose Hamid of Charlotte. “But I do believe there is a chance.” Muslims across the state oppose the bill they think is motivated by intolerance and may potentially infringe on other religious groups. Bills against judicial consideration of “foreign laws” are believed to really be opposing Shariah, or Islamic law.

If McCrory signs the bill, North Carolina would become the seventh state to have an anti-Shariah law, joining Arizona, Kansas, Louisiana, South Dakota, Oklahoma, and Tennessee. In May, Alabama lawmakers approved a like-minded constitutional amendment that state voters will consider in 2014. “It’s a 50-50 shot,” said Corey Saylor, a spokesman for the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations, which has sent out a national “action alert” urging Muslims to call and email McCrory to ask him to veto the law. “I’m hopeful that reason will prevail over bigotry and ignorance.”

Manning Verdict May Topple Journalistic Paradigm

After more than three years in prison, 10 and a half months of which were in solitary confinement, enduring cruel and degrading treatment throughout his incarceration, Pfc. Bradley Manning now awaits a final verdict in his court-martial. The verdict will be announced Tuesday at 1 p.m. EST, according to a spokesperson for the military district of Washington.

Government prosecutors called Manning an “anarchist” and “traitor” last Thursday during closing arguments at Fort Meade, Maryland, where Mannings court-martial has been playing out for nearly two months now. But the prosecutions character assassination of Manning is not the worst of it. Think the world needs an alternative to corporate media? Man Attacked, Robbed by Men Yelling 'This is for Trayvon'

A beating of a white Maryland man in Washington DC over the weekend is being treated as a hate crime, as police report that the three black men involved in the robbery yelled “This is for Trayvon Martin” before the attack.

The beating took place in the northwest DC neighborhood of Adams Point Saturday in the early morning hours. The men approached the victim from behind before two of them threw him to the ground, took his iPhone and all three fled the scene. He suffered minor injuries and turned down medical attention, according to the report.
