FIFA officials arrested in Switzerland on bribery and corruption charges

Swiss officials arrested seven officials from FIFA, the governing body of international soccer, early Wednesday morning US time at their hotel in Zurich.

  1. The arrests were made at the request of the US attorney for the Eastern District of New York, who wants them in connection with a bribery investigation.
  2. Hours after the arrests, the Swiss Office of the Attorney General opened a second, unrelated investigation concerning the bidding process for the 2018 Russia World Cup and the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
