It’s been a long journey from Van Halen’s “Hot for Teacher,” released in 1984, to the recent Saturday Night Live skit about a teacher on trial for raping one of her male high school students.
The video for “Hot for Teacher” had child versions of the members of Van Halen reveling in the sexual portrayal of their teachers. The Twitter backlash against the SNL “Teacher Rape Trial” skit portrayed a different attitude.
The sketch about an inappropriate relationship between a student, played by resident young person Pete Davidson, and a teacher, played by Cecily Strong, has come under attack by fans online for its tone-deaf treatment of rape,” says the Gothamist.
